![]() She’d sigh, resting her chin in her hands, and deflate against the desk. She was often looking off into the distance or out the window, with a wistful look on her face as her legs kicked idly at the air beneath her. And, even if we didn’t speak much, I always got the sense that there was something on her mind. I think that was part of what drew me to her. We worked on a book report together once, but that was it even then, we didn’t talk much except to ask for proofreading from one another. Usually she had her nose in the pages of a book, and I never heard of her doing anything outside of school, as if she’d rather go home and retreat from all social contact. But, to her credit, she didn’t seem to want to talk much, either. I was always a quiet person, and I never worked up the courage to say anything to her. Our desks were next to each other since school started, and I developed a crush on her not long thereafter – one that I never really let go of. The one with the thick glasses and the twin braids. Specifically, I’m talking about the girl I actually am into. The people I met but never could work up the courage to talk to. I’m talking about the friends I wish I had made while I was here. I’m pretty sure half of the class thinks that we’re a thing, and the other half probably thinks I’m gay because they know I’m not into her.īut those were all friends I already had, so I don’t really count it. We’ve had spirited discussions on how Yamcha deserved better and she swears by this as though it was her religion. ![]() But she’s got the boisterous attitude to match and she shares my propensity for getting way too deeply invested into stories. She’s the head of the school kendo club and she was always on top in gym class. The two of us have been in the same class ever since elementary. Then there’s the taller girl with the red ponytail. Yeah, that was mainly because he had a video game console before I did, but his sense of humor stuck with me, and we were always the ones to share our dumb in-jokes about whatever happened on the anime and tokusatsu we watched the week before and giggle like idiots while everyone else gave us weird looks. We started out just kicking the soccer ball around the street, and then we’d start coming over to each others’ houses for the weekend. I think it started out with us both being boys of the same age, but we hit it off well. He lives on my block and the two of us have been friends since we were kids. The short guy with the glasses is Takuya Itou. We all agreed to be here together, after all. In fact, I’ve got a few of my friends standing by me right now. That makes it sound like I don’t have any friends, and that isn’t true. Okay, maybe that statement is a little misleading. I, Shin Kurata, after spending three years at middle school, graduated without making a single friend.
